Shalom House Bed & Breakfast

Meet the Family

Proprietors: Shalom House Bed & Breakfast is owned and operated by Margaret and Hank House.

The waterfall is finally in working condition. We got the electricity hooked up to the patio and are enjoying the benefits thereof. We are still playing with rock formations and need some aquatic plants of course. So we'll try to have it completed before you arrive!
We picked a multitude of blueberries this year and have experimented with some blueberry dishes for your enjoyment. Jonathan says "yum. Keep experimenting Mom."

Pets

  • Pringles: The eldest cat on the property. This cat was named for the potato chips. Can you tell we had a bottomless pit teenager on board when "pringles" came along? At the same time we got Claire (the chocolate lab) whose legal name is Chocleta Eclair House. Well, Jonathan is still a bottomless pit and is always thinking about eating. At the time Pringles came along, Jonathan tried to name a few of my goats. He called them Bubba, Sonny's,and B-B-Q. I frowned upon these names and I think the goats actually made it to their first birthdays.

Well, back to Pringles. He was a kitten when we began construction on our Pond House and additions at the main house. He loves to climb, which will explain the cat prints you'll probably find on your vehicle when you go to leave. Pringles has been on every horizontal board in this place high or low. The a/c guys were installing duct-work in the ceiling of the Pond House and turned on their narrow scaffolding to look into the eyes of this climbing cat. Fortunately, they didn't fall off in surprise!

  • Claire: Born in Tennessee just above Chattanooga. She slept on my lap all the way home and me, Margaret, who didn't like dogs, became a chocolate addict.

  • Angel: Another chocolate treat. We got Angel on a swap. We paid $50 more for a golden retreiver named Mollly (obviously not named by Jonathan.) Molly was so stupid that the day she fell in the pond and managed to get to the crossbars under the bridge and hold on for dear life, I left her to her own devices. She was a retriever for crying out loud! Somehow she managed to retrieve enough information out of her DNA to figure out how to swim to the side of the pond and thus she rescued herself! Upon the first opportunity I got for a dog swap, I traded her for a rambunctious and not yet fully obedient chocolate lab. I got the best deal as Angel learned obedience and became a real sweetheart. Molly's new family thought it was great to get a dog who refused to get wet. She even got a bow in her hair and the new family's little girls were thrilled to get a pansy dog. Me, I prefer chocolate.

  • Snookie: Well, Jonathan think's her name is Snowy, although when you meet her you know she's not anywhere close to the color of snow. Well I suppose there might be some snow somewhere this color, but I guarantee you that you won't want to eat it! She's a full-blooded pyrenes and is supposedly bred to take care of goats, sheep, etc. A good pyrenes will cut out of the herd a pregnant goat about to kid, prepare her for birth, clean the kid after it is born, and protect them both. Shall we suffice it to say Snookie is not the best pyrenes, but at least she keeps the bobcats, foxes, and raccoons away from the pen.

  • Cheeto (alias "Bullet"): Kayli thinks her name is Cheeto because that is what she looks like, but her name really should be Bullet cause that's what she acts like! Don't believe me? Just open the door and you too will be amazed at the speed of this outdoor cat trying to become an indoor cat!

  • BC (Barn Cat): We got her only for the barn. She sleeps at the barn. She recently had a package of kittens. We chose to keep one of them. His name is Darkness. Want to guess what color he is? He also sleeps at the barn but he might allow you to catch and pet him. Please feel free to.

  • By the way, all the cats eat on the screened porch at the pond house. It's a self feeding system. We keep their sack of food open on a table so that when they are hungry they just go in and eat what they want. We tried to feed them like normal folks do, but our "normal" dogs would find their food and the cats would get nothing!

  • The Fowl: These fowl are called guineas. I hear they are good to eat but I have yet to find out. That's why these here are so peaceful and carefree. Of course they can make a ruckus if they are disturbed by local wildlife who want to find out of they are good to eat! So if you hear them making a fuss, how about running down to the barn to chase off the fox or whatever is bothering them.

  • Ducks: We finally got to have a duck derby this year. (We were without a female for a couple of years). A duck derby is when the babies hatch and we catch them before the bass do. It is funner than brier rabbit in the briar patch.
So this summer 14 babies hatched and we had our duck derby. We put these wee little ducks in a pen and let them grow. We recently released them into the pond and they had the most fun swimming and going under water then popping up 10 feet away. You'd think they were a bunch of kids playing for the first time in the water.
Hey, they ARE a bunch of kids playing in the water!

  • The Youngun's Only one of them is home this summer. But they are all in college this fall. Benji is at Tallahasee. Well not really right now. He is currently in Vienna, Austria studying German for the summer. Yep, he ate ramen noodles for six months so he could put his nickels and dimes into airfare and tuition and make the trip of a lifetime. He spent two weeks in Europe before German classes started just taking the train and "couch surfing" and making new friends in such places as Paris, Madrid, Milano, Bordeaux, Geneva.
Jonathan graduated from Mercer University in Macon and is headed in the fall to Montana State at Bozeman. Since he is only half-Georgian he wanted to take his half-Montanan side to Montana and experience a year in the Big Sky country. He will pick up a masters degree while he is there. Oh yeah, he is taking his snow board! That's a pre-requisite for graduate school isn't it?
Keri is a junior and is planning to attend Kennesaw State in the fall. She will be a dance major.
Kayli is attending Valdsota State this fall as a sophomore. I told the kids that if they left home I'd have to rent their rooms. (haha) So..... opening soon. . . .
I'm just waiting on them to make their final selections as to what they want to take out of their rooms ... and walla ....I'll get their rooms ready - for you!
There's Melanie also. She lives in Atlanta and has for about 15 years now.
